Grk: begin in Lumbarda
Grk’s connection with Lumbarda is a good starting point for understanding the island’s wine. The sandy vineyard landscape gives a tasting a sense of place that a label alone cannot. Book directly with a producer and ask what the visit includes, which wines will be poured and whether transport can be arranged.
Pošip: turn inland
Čara and Smokvica belong in the Pošip chapter. Do not mistake a short list of grape names for a reason to race between cellars: a single well-explained visit can be more rewarding than several rushed ones. Choose an inland wine day separately from a long beach-and-boat schedule, and do not drive after drinking.
A dish with a village behind it
Žrnovski makaruni are hand-shaped pasta associated with Žrnovo. Ask how a kitchen makes and serves them rather than assuming every version will be the same. Island menus also make room for fish, vegetables, olive oil and seasonal cooking. Ask what is actually available that day instead of expecting a fixed postcard menu.
Choose a table, not a claim
A view is not proof of a good kitchen, and the word ‘local’ deserves a follow-up question. Ask about ingredients, preparation, portion style and the full price before ordering. We do not present unverified restaurant partnerships or invented ratings. For popular meals or special dietary needs, contact the restaurant in advance.
A few good questions
Which local wines should I look for?
Grk around Lumbarda and Pošip around Čara and Smokvica are useful starting points. Availability and styles differ by producer; a tasting is an introduction, not a guarantee of one flavour profile.
