Vela Luka is a different base, not a suburb of Korčula Town. Begin with the waterfront and allow time for the town itself before leaving for an excursion. Arriving here makes most sense when your accommodation and plans acknowledge the western side of the island, rather than treating the port as interchangeable with the east.

Above the town, Vela spila is an important prehistoric archaeological site. Its story belongs in a western visit, but access must be verified: the tourist board’s English page listed the cave as closed when checked for this edition. Consult the current official information rather than assuming a scheduled visit is possible. The cultural centre’s archaeological collection offers further context; confirm its hours too.
A boat day with a plan B
Proizd and Ošjak are among the small islands associated with Vela Luka. Boat operations and sea conditions determine what is possible on your dates. Confirm the return, carry what you need and keep a waterfront or inland alternative. A destination can be beautiful without being accessible on demand.
Stay west, or travel west deliberately
For an island-wide stay, consider splitting your time between east and west rather than repeatedly crossing the island. For a short trip, choose one side and explore it well. The journey is part of the visit, but it should not consume the hours you hoped to spend by the sea.
